Introducing the Scale of Perceived Affect Response to Online Worship (SPAROW): a psychometric assessment of ritual innovation during the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in the use of online platforms for Christian worship and emphasised need a simple psychometric instrument that is sufficiently general assess affect responses range services. This paper reports on development six-item Scale Perceived Affect Response Online Worship (SPAROW) during third UK lockdown 2021. scale items were included survey completed from January July 2021 by 2,017 Anglicans living England 1713 Roman Catholics or Republic Ireland. Exploratory Factor Analysis (principal components extraction varimax rotation) Anglican sample indicated single-dimensional had excellent internal consistency reliability those who accessed pre-recorded services (α = .90, n 1238) live-streamed .91, 1492). Confirmatory Catholic using Structural Equation Model showed good fit scale.
